We come together

On the 21st of January 2021 researchers affiliated with Maastricht University and the Maastricht UMC+ will come together to discuss research in the domain of skills and simulation education. This meeting will provide an opportunity to learn about the research projects carried out by colleagues and explore venues for collaboration across departments. This inspiring day will pave the way for the realization of a strong research community working under a united label.

Goals of the day
Program
  • 13:00-14:15

Plenary session. After a hearty welcome, Jeroen van Merriënboer (SHE), Femke Jongen (Skillslab), and Uli Strauch (Simulation Center) will present their respective departments. Researchers Joy Lee, Nynke de Jong, Christine den Harder, Valerie van den Eertweg, and Dewa Westerman will introduce you to currently ongoing research projects.

  • 14:30-15:30

Breakout group discussions. After a 15-minute break you join one of the small group sessions to brainstorm and gather concrete ideas for further steps:

1: Performance assessment. Discussion leader: Mary Dankbaar. This group will discuss how protocols, instruments, tools, or data can be used and shared to measure participants' learning and performance in simulation education.

2: Training simulation facilitators: Discussion leader: Lars Mommers. This group will discuss how different departments take care of training their simulation educators. What works well and what could be improved?

3: Design of simulation education on the whole continuum: from undergraduate to workplace-based. Discussion leader: Peter van Rosmalen. This group will discuss research on aspects of instructional design. Educators from different contexts share design experiences and lessons learned.

4: Governance. This simulation day should not be a one-day initiative. The key department heads discuss how we can turn this movement into a sustainable community that collaborates within and across department walls.

Plenary session. After a 15-min break, the outcomes of the small group discussions are shared with the rest of the group. Fueled by the input an attempt is made to synthesize current ideas and create a first outline for a shared approach to reach the goals of this community. What is our vision and mission, and how can it be sustained beyond this simulation day?

  • 16:45-17:00

Pub quiz! After this intense afternoon your brain must work hard once more to answer some funny and creative questions. But as an expert, you surely know all the answers... right?
